What is Sandtray Therapy?

Healing beyond words.

Sandtray Therapy is a powerful, expressive, and trauma-informed therapeutic approach that allows clients to explore their inner world using miniature figures and a tray of sand. This technique gives voice to thoughts and feelings that are often difficult to express with words alone.

Rooted in Jungian psychology, Sandtray Therapy was influenced by the work of Margaret Lowenfeld and Dora Kalff in the mid-20th century. It blends elements of play, symbolism, and depth psychology, making it a deeply intuitive and healing experience for both children and adults.

How It Works

Clients choose miniature figures, objects, and symbols to place in a tray of sand, creating scenes that reflect their inner experiences, struggles, and desires. With the guidance of a trained therapist, these scenes become a pathway for reflection, insight, and emotional healing.

Who is it For?

Sandtray Therapy is suitable for people of all ages — from young children to adults — especially those who:

  • Have experienced trauma or abuse

  • Struggle to express emotions verbally

  • Are navigating anxiety, grief, or major life transitions

  • Are seeking deeper self-understanding and integration

  • Thrive with creative, visual, or somatic approaches to healing

Benefits of Sandtray Therapy

  • Encourages emotional release and healing

  • Helps process trauma in a non-verbal and gentle way

  • Supports nervous system regulation through tactile engagement

  • Enhances self-awareness and integration of unconscious material

  • Builds resilience, insight, and inner clarity

As a therapist trained in Sandtray Therapy, I create a safe, respectful, and attuned environment where your story can unfold at your own pace — with no pressure to “say the right thing.” Sometimes, the sand speaks when words fall short.
